Vertigo Complete Solicits for August 2015

Astro City #24

Astro City #24

The solicits for Vertigo’s August releases are finally out, and what we are immediately confronted with is a shrinking population of titles.  The several miniseries that recently filled out their line-up, including The Kitchen, Wolf Moon, The Names, and Bodies, all ended, and the loss of Fables, Fairest, Dead Boy Detectives, and Hinterkind is showing a dramatic absence.  This is a bit surprising given the expectation that we have had for a major Vertigo revamp based on statements executives made in 2014, so we are still waiting for more of a line-up.

This most interesting thing will be the deluxe hardcover release of a graphic novel from Anthony Bordain, of all people.  The world-traveling food aficionado is doing a sequel to their previous Vertigo release, Get Jiro.  The new book, Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi, jump back into their main character and his personal history with organized crime and chefdom.  Beyond this, we note that Fables: The Wolf Among Us will be ending, and with the last issues of the regular Fables series ending in July, this will mark the actual end of Fables on Vertigo.  There are also deluxe versions of Fables, Y: The Last Man, and 100 Bullets being released, which is a nice reminder that Vertigo always continues to promote their long-ended books to keep them in readership.  Vertigo has always gone after the “book store” crowd as well as the comic die-hards, which means that their books tend to be “evergreen” and can stay popular almost indefinitely.

Acclaimed chef, writer, and television personality, Anthony Bourdain, and Joel Rose (Kill The Poor) return for the follow-up to their #1 New York Times bestseller, GET JIRO!, from Vertigo.
In GET JIRO: BLOOD AND SUSHI, Bourdain and Rose examine the origins of the mysterious Jiro and what made him into the chef he has become. Born the heir to a Yakuza crime family, Jiro never longed to travel the criminal path laid out before him, but instead chose to secretly study the rich culinary history of his homeland—something that would have significant repercussions if discovered by his gangster father! And as Jiro’s interest in the culinary arts deepens, the challenge of keeping his artistic and criminal worlds separate becomes too great, triggering a great personal loss that will forever change Jiro’s path.
