Marvel has got DC beat. At least for now.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe, worked by Marvel Studios, has done something incredibly remarkable. They have taken the notion of “continuity,” the ability to create a shared universe for different titles, over to the film world. This has been a hallmark of comics for decades, where there is a common universe among all Marvel comics. Now with films like Iron Man, the Avengers, and Ant-Man, there is a common universe where they will all interact. This has created a web for viewers who will want to stay with this shared cinematic universe, and it really builds on what made the comics special.
DC, on the other hand, is just starting this. Generally, DC characters have just been helmed in their own stories by different filmmakers. For example, the Christopher Nolan interpretation of Batman with films like The Dark Knight are done in a cinematic world where the only character that exists is Batman and his “rogues gallery,” and there is certainly no way to work Superman in there.
The first film they began with to develop their DC Cinematic Universe was Man of Steel in 2013, yet we are still waiting for the second. There is, however, a slate of films coming up, with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad being the most visible films in the works.
So what films do we know are out, coming out, or on the slate?
