Vertigo Solicits for April 2016

April rings in with just a couple of eye catching items, which is really only a testament to the consistency of the new line of Vertigo books.  The big new item is Dark Night: A True Batman Story from Paul Dini and Eduardo Risso.  This Original Graphic Novel is one of the most unique concepts in recent years.  Dini is known for his work on the groundbreaking Batman: The Animated Series, and he is telling a story of a vicious attack he suffered many years ago and how it drew his vision of a dystopian criminal Gotham.  This sort of personalization of the Batman mythos will remind Vertigo fans of 2004’s It’s a Bird, which looks at author Steven Seagle’s personal history with Huntington’s Disease and looking how the idea of Superman redefines heroism.  This personal work is an incredible turn for Vertigo, which has been somewhat light on OGN’s in recent years.  This is no surprise since they tend to not be the most profitable of their properties.

Unfollow and Art Ops both get their first trades, which is actually light since there should be other launch series that have trade collections this month.  It looks like Vertigo is intentionally spacing out the release of the trades, which is somewhat surprising given the number of Vertigo readers who will be doing trade-only.  The trade collection of Twilight Children is also released, which captures the entire beautiful miniseries.  We are anticipating a beautiful Deluxe Edition later on with a lot of “behind the scenes” content.  Many of the series are hitting issue #7, which may signify the second main arc for them.

DMZ is seeing “Book One,” which is essentially a new packaging of the great series.  What is incredibly exciting is that Hellblazer is seeing trade #13, which is a wonderful reminder that Vertigo’s library is always going to be alive.

The big finale of Fables: A Wolf Among Us(At least we think it is) is here in April with #16, which is about ten issues longer than we expected.  The series has been a good yet modest story, and we are happy with what it has added to the Fables universe.  There is a tinge of sadness here since this is the true end of Fables, even though we sent it off with fanfare last summer.

DARK NIGHT: A TRUE BATMAN STORY HC
Written by PAUL DINI
Art and cover by EDUARDO RISSO
On sale JUNE 15 • 128 pg, FC, $22.99 US • MATURE READERS
The Caped Crusader has been the all-abiding icon of justice and authority for generations. But in this surprising original graphic novel, we see Batman in a new light—as the savior who helps a discouraged man recover from a brutal attack that left him unable to face the world.
In the 1990s, Eisner Award-winning writer Paul Dini had a flourishing career writing the hugely popular Batman: The Animated Series and Tiny Toon Adventures. Walking home one evening, he was jumped and viciously beaten within an inch of his life. His recovery process was arduous, hampered by the imagined antics of the villains he was writing for television including The Joker, Harley Quinn and the Penguin. But despite how bleak his circumstances were, or perhaps because of it, Dini also always imagined the Batman at his side during his darkest moments.
DARK NIGHT: A TRUE BATMAN STORY is the harrowing and eloquent autobiographical tale of Dini’s courageous struggle to overcome a truly desperate situation. It is a Batman story like none other and one that will truly resonate with fans. Art by the incredibly talented Eduardo Risso (100 BULLETS, DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE).
